Which tools do you really need to sell an online course?

Choosing a training platform depends as much on learner tracking as on payments. Compare systeme.io, Thinkific, Kajabi and Podia in a real launch.

Payment and educational quality are two paths to be validated separately.

To sell a first course, you need a clear offer page, payment, the correct access and a way to respond to learners. Systeme.io combines funnels, email and courses in an entry-level plan; Thinkific develops the learning experience; Kajabi combines courses, community and marketing in a broader suite; Podia offers a simple workflow with transaction fees to check by plan. Choose after testing a sale, a refund and progress through a real module, rather than only the payment page.

Offer status at 27 September 2026. This analysis is based on official grids and aids. The rules of VAT, vocational training, funding and certification depend on your activity: do not deduct any regulatory compliance from the mere presence of a course tool.

Describe the product before choosing the platform

A video course sold to individual customers for 49 € does not require the same follow-up as a six-week programme with marked exercises and payment by a company. Write down the promise, audience, prerequisites, learning sequence, assessment method, response times and access conditions. Only then list the features you need: video hosting, progress tracking, quizzes, appointments, community, email, invoices and exports.

The purchasing funnel is short: offer page, payment, confirmation message and access. The learning journey is longer: welcome, activity, feedback, progress and support. A high conversion rate says nothing about learners’ ability to finish the programme. Define at least one metric for each journey before launch.

systeme.io: check the ceilings of the free plan

The official grid announces a free tier with, among other features, 2,000 contacts, three funnels, one course and a custom domain. The service provides a French page about comparison of plans and email, payment and affiliate features. If you are starting with a single offer, this integration can avoid connecting three services. However, assess what takes you beyond the free plan: contacts, funnels, automation rules, domains and courses you can publish. “Unlimited emails” does not imply unlimited contacts.

Create a test purchase for a learner and another for a business. Check the access email, correct module, billing address and removal of access after a refund. If you manage cohorts or individual assignment feedback, verify learning progress tracking in the student area instead of assuming the sales funnel will provide it.

Thinkific: Watching active students, not just the number of courses

The grid Thinkific advertises unlimited published courses on the tiers compared here, but also limits on currently active students, video bandwidth, communities, administrators and sales features. The advertised trial lasts 30 days. For a training provider launching a new cohort each quarter, count the people who will retain access simultaneously and the volume of video viewed, rather than the number of files uploaded once.

Have someone outside the team follow a test module: they must find the next activity, understand what is expected of them and resume after a week of absence. Then check what the administrator sees from the progress and what data remains exportable. A beautiful course page may mask insufficient follow-up for your pedagogy.

Kajabi: Pay one suite only if its other bricks serve

Kajabi presents itself on its tariff page as a suite combining a website, email, community, payments and products. Compare its price with the cost of the services you would actually stop using, rather than only another provider’s video hosting. Record the limits on products, active contacts, administrators and messages for the tier shown in your account. If your current website and email software work well, migration may take more time than the difference in subscription price suggests.

Test the sale of a program with a community and a host sequence, then export content and contacts. Do not assume that a better page model increases the success rate of training: the quality of exercises, feedback and follow-up remains a teaching task.

Podia : put the selling costs in the equation

The grid Podia lists a 5 % Podia transaction fee on Mover and no Podia transaction fee on Shaker or Earthquaker, with payment provider fees added depending on location. Podia Email includes different subscriber allowances by plan. A trainer who occasionally sells an inexpensive product may accept a percentage; with regular sales at higher prices, the plan without that percentage may become cheaper despite a higher subscription cost.

Teaching example, excluding payment processing fees: 20 sales of a course at 100 € generate 2 000 € in revenue; 5 % represents 100 € in Podia fees on Mover. Compare that amount with the difference in subscription cost for the higher plan at the time of purchase. Include refunds, taxes and processor fees before deciding. Podia's documentation also specifies email subscriber and migration assistance limits by plan.

The seven-step launch test

  1. Publish an offer page indicating the expected result, program, prerequisites and conditions of access.
  2. Make a test purchase with a second account and check the debit amount.
  3. Check the bill, e-mail and opening the right course, including on the phone.
  4. Have a learner complete a lesson, submit an exercise and receive human feedback in line with your promise.
  5. Test a request for assistance, a refund and possible revocation of access.
  6. Export contacts, commands, contents and progress available; note what would require manual migration.
  7. Calculate annual subscription, sales fees, e-mail beyond quotas, video and related tools.

If the first block is the sale of a simple training, start with a tool that covers the page cycle → payment → access without excessive technical debt. If blocking is learning, require a demonstration of follow-up and feedback. If your organization sells to companies or requests financing, have your contractual, tax and training obligations checked separately; the software does not meet them by its presence alone.
