Proton: email, VPN, storage and privacy tools

Email, VPN, storage and privacy tools.

At a glance

Is Proton worth considering?

Yes if you recognize yourself here: users wanting a digital ecosystem centered on confidentiality. Email, VPN, storage and privacy tools. Less appropriate for: companies heavily dependent on competing collaborative office suites. In this case, look at an alternative of the same category.

Visual context

Official visual of Proton: what it represents

Proton Calendar open in the Proton Mail side panel. This is an official product visual, distinct from an interface screenshot. Logicelio relates it to the product’s positioning, “Email, VPN, storage and privacy tools”, and to these features: Proton Mail, Proton VPN and Proton Drive. It makes no claims about elements that are not visible in the image.

The visual comes from an official Proton resource.

What to remember before choosing Proton

Proton is a product family, not a unique function. To properly compare its offer, start with the need: protect IDs with Pass, use a VPN or organize email and files. Buying a suite can simplify billing, but should not hide the capabilities actually used.

What Proton offers on a daily basis

01
Pass and suite are not interchangeable

The Proton Pass and Proton grids offer separate and grouped offers. List services already paid elsewhere and those you will actually migrate. A theoretical advantage over several subscriptions exists only if these replacements are practicable.

02
Alias protect the main address

Proton documents aliases that redirect messages to the personal box. They allow to give a different address to a service, but do not make the data entered on this service anonymous. Keep the link between alias, account and destination to avoid losing a recovery.

03
The package determines the capacity of aliases

The grid distinguishes free capacities and aliases without limit of number of corresponding offers. Estimate the number of new accounts and sharing needs. Do not just choose the number of passwords that can be stored.

04
Grouping requires continuity plan

If the courier is used to retrieve many accounts and the vault contains their access, prepare the emergency procedures carefully. Check exports and recovery of each service separately. A single invoice does not mean a single restoration procedure.

When this option makes sense

Who it is for: users who want to consolidate certain services while comparing their exact scope.

When to look at another approach: Compare the price of Proton Unlimited to that of a single password manager gives a misleading result if other services are not required. Use Pass as a comparable perimeter in this case.

An independent person already equipped elsewhere

Proton Unlimited deserves a comparison if several services will actually be replaced. If only the vault is missing, start with Proton Pass and compare it to specialized managers. The choice must follow the migration cost and continuity, not the number of logos included.

Price: what you really need to budget

Preparing your decision

Three checks to see if Proton suits you

Associate a fictitious account with an alias and check how to find messages and login information.

  1. Choose the exact product

Write the services to migrate and compare their separate offers to the bundled package.

  2. Check an alias

Create an internal test path and monitor the receipt, responses and identification of the associated service.

  3. Preparing for recovery

Document the emergency means of the box and vault. Make sure they don't depend solely on each other.

What TechRadar actually tested

This test was carried out by TechRadar, not by Logicelio. I cite it to provide a perspective based on actual use, without adopting its verdict as my own.

The protocol announced: Confidentiality tests, network coverage, protocols and performance.

TechRadar highlights confidentiality, audits and geographic coverage, but reports lower OpenVPN performance than some competitors.
