At a glance

Is Squarespace worth considering?

Yes if you recognize yourself here: independents wanting an aesthetic site with little maintenance. Website builder, portfolio and commerce. Less appropriate for: projects requiring a very expandable CMS or complex code. In this case, look at an alternative of the same category.

Official visual of Squarespace: what it represents

Squarespace Fluid Engine presented on the official Website Builder page. This is an official product visual, distinct from an interface screenshot. Logicelio relates it to the product’s positioning, “Website building, portfolios and commerce”, and to these features: templates and website creation, blogs and portfolios, and e-commerce. It makes no claims about elements that are not visible in the image.

The visual comes from an official Squarespace resource.

What to remember before choosing Squarespace

Squarespace may be suitable for an activity that wants to present its services and publish without assembling many components. As soon as it sells, the choice of package must incorporate the nature of the products and the transaction fees. A showcase site, a physical shop and a digital content space are not the same.

What Squarespace offers on a daily basis

01
The current plan must be identified

The aid distinguishes between Basic, Core, Plus and Advanced and old subscriptions. For an existing site, compare the functions used before changing the plan. A new grid does not necessarily describe your historical contract.

02
Sales costs are not all the same

Squarespace differentiates platform fees and payment processing, with rules specific to digital content. Calculate the total on your volume and average basket. A zero rate in a column does not mean that all payment processing fees disappear.

03
Services have separate billings

Documentation explains that domain, site, email campaigns and some old modules can have their own cycles. Make an inventory of active subscriptions. Centralization in a dashboard does not transform the whole into a single fixed bill.

04
The test must cover future work

The grid announces a fourteen-day trial. Use it to publish representative content and simulate the take-over by the owner. The right criterion is the ability to modify pages and manage requests after delivery, not just to choose a template.

When this option makes sense

Who it is for: independents who want to publish and sell in an integrated framework.

When to look at another approach: Old Personal, Business and Commerce offers should not be mixed with current plans. Check the contract generation and fees applicable to the type of sale.

The cost of the site alone is no longer sufficient. Compare the costs on digital content and the tools that are really needed for the purchase route. A higher subscription may become relevant to a certain volume, to be calculated on the rates applicable to your contract.

Preparing your decision

Three checks to see if Squarespace suits you

Compare a service site with one-off sales and a site that regularly sells digital content.

  1. Define what is sold

Separate services, products and digital content, then the expected volumes.

  2. Calculate total

Add subscription, modules and applicable fees without confusing platform and payment fees.

  3. Test Maintenance

Edit a page and prepare a fictitious product by the person managing the site.

What TechRadar actually tested

This test was carried out by TechRadar, not by Logicelio. I cite it to provide a perspective based on actual use, without adopting its verdict as my own.

The protocol announced: Create an account, build a site, test the vendor, SEO, marketing, plans and support.

Squarespace is considered very good for design and simplicity, with a higher price than some alternatives and less flexibility for very technical needs.
